Back to school, back to reality: A guide

Back to school, back to reality: A guide

It’s come to that time of the year again when you have enjoyed 6 weeks of sunshine and fun activities, but as August starts to fade, it’s time to get back to reality… and back to school.

One of the responsibilities of being a parent requires preparing your child for a new routine, and get them excited to get back to education. We’ve noted a few tips that will hopefully get your child excited and prepared ahead of next week!

Engage them in sports
If your budget is getting low due to the last days of the summer holiday, why not take your child down to the local park to enjoy a game of football or simply walking the dog around the village? This natural scenery is perfect for families to go and enjoy picnics and embrace the tranquillity of chirping birds and ducks in the lake. The water park nearby is bound to let off some energy too.

Take them shopping
Every child gets super excited when they buy their school supplies e.g. pens, crayons, new uniform. This is a good way to refresh your child’s memory of the subjects and hobbies they enjoy in school which kicks in the excited emotions to start the new academic year. Create a checklist with your child so make sure you have everything covered.

Re-establishing routine
During the summer holidays we tend to take it easy on our kids in terms of sleeping late, eating their favourite foods and giving them the ps4 to play with all day, however as school starts to approach it is important to get your child back into the routine so it doesn’t become a daunting experience to deal with later. Try to swap the video games with academic educational games that can be found on websites such as My Maths or Nintendo Brain Train.

Create a meal plan
It is important to start being conscious about your child’s diet especially as school approaches. Take them to the supermarket with you, make a meal plan and discuss the changes that will happen in their lunch boxes. There are many fun sized healthy snacks that will fill your child with the right vitamins and fibre such as animal shaped food which surprisingly encourages and excites children to gain a balanced diet again.

It can be overwhelming trying to shop for back to school items, especially when you have multiple children in different year groups. It’s always a difficult procedure trying to prepare for the first day of school but hopefully with these tips, you will get an outline of where to start. Make the most of your last few days before the rush kicks in!
