Making Tax Digital Is Coming – Are You Ready?

Making Tax Digital (MTD) Client Factsheet.

This is a general help sheet but you should make your own enquiries into what is required based on your own personal circumstances. So as to avoid any possible fines.

Who is affected?
Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax applies based on your combined gross income (before expenses) from self-employment and/or UK property.

From Gross Income Threshold
April 2026 Over £50,000
April 2027 Over £30,000
April 2028 Over £20,000

Your responsibilities
• Keep digital accounting records using compatible MTD software.
• Submit an update to HMRC every three months.
• First quarterly submission deadline for the 2026/27 tax year: 7 August 2026.
• Submit an annual final declaration.
• Pay any tax due by 31 January following the end of the tax year.

What should you do now?
If your rental and/or self-employment income may exceed the relevant threshold, start preparing now speaking to your accountant or tax adviser and ensuring your records are maintained digitally.
