The Beautiful Village of Goldhanger

The Beautiful Village of Goldhanger

The delightful village of Goldhanger is one that is often requested by buyers! and here are a few Reasons why...

Goldhanger is first mentioned in the Domesday book but there has undoubtedly been a settlement here since long before that. Neolithic flints have been found in Goldhanger Creek, dating some form of civilisation back to about 5,000 years ago!

There are some beautiful walks around Goldhanger and we are fortunate to have miles of sea wall stretching along the Blackwater Estuary as far as Maldon on one side and Tollesbury and beyond on the other. The estuary is teeming with bird life and is a fascinating and inspiring place whether the tide is in or out. Once you return from your rambles, there are some very welcoming watering holes in the village to revive and refresh you.

The Chequers has been an alehouse, and later an inn and public house, for around 250 years. The house was however built about 500 years ago, probably by a yeoman or small landowner as his private residence. It is in a prominent position in the village next to St Peters church, which is much older, and is on the east side of The Square. It is said to have been used as a court house when first built.

St. Peter’s Church is central to the spirit of the village and the close community here. The Community Room provides a small meeting room, a kitchen and toilet facilities. There is a number of events involving the whole village every year and it is a favourite place for marriages due to the beautiful setting. The church has a long history dating back to the 11th century. There may well have been a religious site here since Saxon times. There is 8 bells in the church tower, two of which date back to 1657.

Goldhanger Sailing Club, nestling between the western seawall and the aromatic strawberry fields of Wilkin & Sons Ltd, enjoys one of the most idyllic and tranquil settings on the River Blackwater. The club was formed in 1959 by a small group of village sailing enthusiasts during an informal chat in the bar of The Chequers public house, and in the summer of 2009 celebrated its 50th Anniversary.
