Why are buyers attracted to the idyllic village of Tolleshunt D'arcy?

Church & Hawes are experiencing high levels of demand in your area. We ask why has Tolleshunt D'arcy become so popular?

Tolleshunt D'Arcy, a delightful village situated on the Blackwater estuary, about 12 miles (19 km) southwest of Colchester, 18.6 miles (30 km) east of Chelmsford and 29.6 miles (48 km) north of Southend-on-Sea, in the county of Essex in the East of England.

The name Tolleshunt originates from the Anglo-Saxon Tolleshunta which means Toll's spring. Toll was an Anglo-Saxon chief who settled in large areas of forest, establishing clearings where water was readily available. Toll was particulary successful in this area with neighbouring settlements Tolleshunt Knight, Tolleshunt Major and Tollesbury also sharing his name.

William the Conqueror gifted this manor to Ralph Peverell for his services rendered during the conquest. The village inherited it's current name during the 15th century when John D'arcy married the a daughter of the De Boys family. D'arcy Hall was an early 16th century building which was constructed as the D'arcy family home.

Other famous D'arcy residents include, Dr John Salter, vice president of the English Kennel Club and a Provincial Grand Master of the Freemasons. South Street was the home of the author Margery Allingham from 1935 - 1966. The most infamous resident is perhaps Jeremy Bamber who made the headlines in 1985 for the murders at White House Farm.

So, why is D'arcy so popular now?
The village retains a village shop providing essentials for the local community. It offers a real traditional village lifestyle which has become rather rare in today's society. The Queens Head is an outstanding local with fantastic food and if you're a curry fan then Ruby's will not disappoint.

Offering a range of properties to suit all budgets the village affords exceptional walks in the countryside, a beautiful Church and some fantastic listed homes. This coupled with the convenience of the local primary school makes Tolleshunt D'arcy a location that ranks highly on our buyer's desired lists.
